Wednesday, August 2 at 11am at Corona Plaza

QUEENS, NY – In response to the NYC Department of Sanitation’s recent heavy-handed enforcement actions against street vendors at Corona Plaza, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Street Vendor Project and others will host a press conference tomorrow, August 2, at 11am at the plaza to denounce the city’s actions and stand in solidarity with impacted street vendors, many of whom are immigrant women of color.

The heavy handed deployment of Sanitation police was conducted over the last week with little advanced notice given to the street vendors and none to local elected officials who have been working diligently to improve the area, including Borough President Richards and members of his Corona Plaza Task Force.

Over the last year, Borough President Richards’ Corona Plaza Task Force has successfully supported a number of new initiatives at the location, including the creation of a Corona Plaza Street Vendors Association and the installation of Citibin garbage and recycling containers to improve plaza cleanliness. These efforts and others have led to Corona Plaza — a thriving hub of culture and cuisine — being highlighted as one of the 100 best places to eat in New York City by The New York Times.

At the August 2 press conference, the elected officials and advocates will demand an end to the city’s unjust enforcement and advocate for the unimpeded continuation of locally led efforts to improve and formalize the vendor market in the plaza, while also calling for an increase to the number of street vendor licenses the city can issue per year.

Members of the media who wish to attend the press conference are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 718-286-2640.
