QUEENS, NY – Two months after declaring in his first State of the Borough address that creating safer streets will be a paramount priority of his administration, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host a press conference tomorrow, May 11, to announce a $3 million allocation toward critical pedestrian safety improvements on the Queensboro Bridge.

The multimillion allocation from Borough President Richards’ capital budget will support the construction of fencing on the bridge’s South Outer roadway between Crescent Street in Long Island City and Second Avenue in Manhattan — currently used as a Queens-bound lane for vehicular traffic.

The $3 million fencing project represents a vital piece of the Mayor’s Office’s large-scale “Bridges for the People” plan to revamp a number of interborough crossings, including the Queensboro Bridge. Once completed, the Queensboro Bridge’s North Outer Roadway will be converted into a two-way bike-only late while the South Outer Roadway will become a two-way pedestrian only lane, giving motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike a safe and equal share of the historic span.

Once completed, the new fencing will help provide a safe, dedicated space for the thousands of pedestrians who walk along the 112-year-old bridge each week, while also increasing interborough connectivity and accessibility.

Members of the media who plan on attending the May 11 press conference are asked to RSVP via email at [email protected] or via phone at 718-286-2640.
