QBP RICHARDS TO HOST TOWN HALL; ANNOUNCE $3 MILLION FOR CANCER CARE AT JAMAICA HOSPITAL ON DAY 4 OF BOROUGH HALL ON YOUR BLOCK

Healthcare funding to pay for state-of-the-art cancer fighting technology

(February 28, 2024 at 11:45am)

QUEENS, NY – “Borough Hall on Your Block: Central Queens” will take a major leap forward tomorrow, February 29, as Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host a morning press conference to announce $3 million in funding for Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and an evening community town hall at Queens Borough Hall.

The press conference will take place at 10am in the lobby of Jamaica Hospital Medical Center’s new cancer center — scheduled to open this spring — created in partnership with Memorial Sloan Kettering. The Borough President’s $3 million allocation will pay for the purchase and installation of the hospital’s first linear accelerator, a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that is used to deliver pinpoint external beam radiation treatments to cancer tumors while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue of the patient.

Joining Borough President Richards will be hospital President and CEO Bruce Flanz, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sabiha Raoof and other members of JHMC’s leadership team. Following the press conference, attendees will receive a tour of the cancer center.

At 6pm, Borough President Richards will host a community town hall in the Helen Marshall Cultural Center at Queens Borough Hall. The town hall will feature remarks from the Borough President and representatives from numerous government agencies — including the NYPD and the city departments of Buildings, Education, Health and Mental Hygiene, Parks and Recreation, Sanitation, Social Services and Transportation — on issues impacting Central Queens. Attendees will also be able to ask questions of Borough President Richards and agency representatives.

Members of the media who wish to attend the press conference and/or the town hall are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 718-286-2640.
