QUEENS, NY – Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will join representatives from Stop & Shop at 11:00am on Thursday, August 26th at the Forest Hills store located at 89-89 Union Turnpike when Stop & Shop announces that those using SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits now have the option to pay with an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card when placing online orders for Stop & Shop Pickup and Delivery.

Over 318,000 Queens residents are beneficiaries of the SNAP program. 1.7 million New York City residents receive SNAP benefits while 38 million Americans (12% of the US population) rely on SNAP.

“Offering EBT payment online is an integral part of Stop & Shop’s commitment to serving our communities,” said Stop & Shop President GORDON REID. “We’re proud to make access to healthy food more accessible and convenient, especially for those impacted by the pandemic.”

“Far too many Queens families continue to face the real and deep threat of food insecurity. This has only been further amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and with the outbreak of the virus, families who rely on SNAP benefits to purchase food were unable to do so safely online,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “As cases of the Delta variant continue to rise, ensuring our lower-income families can put food on the table without potentially risking their health is critically important. Queens thanks Stop & Shop for this initiative that will help keep our borough safe during this public health crisis.”

SNAP promotes long-term health and well-being, especially for children. Research shows that SNAP reduces poverty and food insecurity, and that over the long term, these impacts lead to improved health and economic outcomes, especially for those who receive SNAP as children.
