BP Richards to announce $5 million across Noguchi Museum, Chocolate Factory Theater

(February 20, 2023 at 10:30am)

QUEENS, NY – Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will officially kick off “Borough Hall on Your Block: Western Queens” tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 21, with a press conference in Long Island City to announce his combined allocation of $5 million in capital funding to the Noguchi Museum and the Chocolate Factory Theater.

The announcement will be held at 12pm inside renowned artist Isamu Noguchi’s former studio, located at 33-38 10th Street, directly across the street from the Noguchi Museum, with a guided tour of the Noguchi Museum with Borough President Richards to follow directly after the press conference. Joining the Borough President at the press conference will be leadership from both the Noguchi Museum and the Chocolate Factory Theater.

Of the $5 million committed by Borough President Richards, $3 million is allocated to the Noguchi Museum for the preservation of Noguchi’s studio building and the construction of a new collections lab and study center. The remaining $2 million is allocated to the Chocolate Factory Theatre for the adaptive re-use of a former manufacturing facility into a permanent home for the performing arts organization, allowing it to remain a community anchor for Western Queens’ art community for years to come.

Members of the media who wish to attend the press conference are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 718-286-2640.

Borough President Richards will then host a Self-Defense and Bystander Training Workshop at Culture Lab LIC in Long Island City on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 5:30pm. The training, provided by Artemis Self-Defense and the NYC Commission on Human Rights, follows up on a successful series of self-defense workshops hosted by Borough President Richards last fall and will give participants the tools to safely respond to incidents of bias, discrimination and violence.

Members of the public who are interested in attending the Self-Defense and Bystander Training Workshop above are asked to RSVP by visiting www.queensbp.org/RSVP.
