Film Screening of "The Shattered Mind"
The NYC Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs invite you to a screening of The Shattered Mind (PG-13). Like other events supported by MOPD and partners, this screening recognizes and celebrates relevant, thought-provoking programming by, for, and about the disability community. • Date: Friday 09/22/2023 • Location: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Avenue, Astoria, NY, Redstone Theater • Time: 4:30-6:45pm (film screening followed by a Q & A with the filmmaker) Written, directed and produced by Black Deaf filmmaker Jade Bryan, The Shattered Mind is the first ever feature film about a Black Deaf Family. The film has received numerous awards and has been featured in film festivals throughout the world. As described by Untitled Magazine: “The Shattered Mind is a film about Zhane Rain, a deaf woman (portrayed by Kyra Korchak) struggling to piece together the history of her hearing loss as she suspects she was not born deaf. Her family, in an attempt to protect her from the pain the facts could cause her, keep this history tucked away, tormented by the secrecy and the lies that stem from it. Although the film is fictional, some elements are fact based on Jade herself.” *Originally scheduled for June, the screening date was postponed due to smoke from the Canadian wildfires and now falls in September, Deaf Awareness Month.* Accessibility information: Wheelchair accessible seating is available. ASL interpretation and CART will be provided during the speaking parts of the event, and live open audio description will be provided during the film. The film itself is captioned. If you have other requests, please indicate them on the registration form or reach out to Crystal Rivera at [email protected] or by calling 347-446-6306 at least 72 hours before the event. Space is limited and registration is required. Register for the event here.
