Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host the inaugural meeting of his Queens Solid Waste Advisory Board (QSWAB), a diverse group of residents and industry representatives recently appointed by the Borough President to advise him on issues related to waste, recycling, resiliency, and other concerns involving environmental protection and equity.
The meeting will be held virtually via Zoom on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 6:30 PM. It will be livestreamed at www.queensbp.org.
Borough President Richards re-established the QSWAB and selected its members from among those who responded to the call for applications he issued on January 25, 2021. These newly appointed members care deeply about how waste affects our borough and share the goal to move Queens to a future in which all resources are recovered. They will be tasked with advising the Borough President on how to respond to the critical environmental issues of our time.
“The arrival of Earth Day reminds us that we in public office are called upon to address a number of serious problems related to climate change and other threats to our environment,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “These newly appointed members of the Queens Solid Waste Advisory Board are civic-minded, well-informed and highly-motivated people who will be valuable resources in guiding policymaking regarding solid waste and other important issues, including the need for environmental justice for those communities that have been disproportionately impacted by climate change and pollution. I know I can count on their support as we work together to create a greener and healthier Queens for ourselves and for future generations.”
During Wednesday’s meeting, Borough President Richards will welcome and address the new board’s members. The board will also hear a presentation on the “State of Waste in Queens” report prepared by the QSWAB Organizing Committee. It will also consider adopting new bylaws and engage in a public comment period.
Members of the public who wish to participate in the public comment period must fill out an RSVP form at www.queensbp.org/RSVP. Instructions on how to participate in the public comment period will be emailed to those who RSVP.
