This concert is dedicated to the famous European Opera singer Marie Van Gelder (1861-1935). Born in Amsterdam, Marie was a soprano educated at Boston Conservatory. She performed in NYC and Berlin. After 1896 she returned to the Netherlands and she sang and taught in Berlin in 1902 and 1903. Marie specialized in Wagner roles and also sang in oratorios. Later she taught and became the head of the voice department at the Women’s College of Alabama. She died of a heart attack at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City on 13 Oct 1935 and was buried with her father at Maple Grove. Gerardus Martinus Van Gelder (1829-1878) was a music teacher in Holland and New York City.
