QBP RICHARDS TO LAUNCH OPERATION URBAN SUSTAINABILTY
Thursday, April 21 at 1:30pm in Flushing
QUEENS, NY – As Queens continues to stare down the dangers of climate change, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will mark Earth Week with a press conference on Thursday, April 21 at 1:30pm to launch Operation Urban Sustainability — a working group of Queens environmentalists, government officials, clean energy leaders, transportation activists and more tasked with guiding the borough’s resiliency initiatives and sustainability-related advocacy efforts.
The press conference will be held at the intersection of Kissena Boulevard and Rose Avenue in Flushing, just steps from where three individuals drowned in their basement apartment last September amidst historic flooding wrought by Hurricane Ida, devastating entire communities across The World’s Borough.
On Thursday, Borough President Richards and members of Operation Urban Sustainability will outline the main goals of the working group. Operation Urban Sustainability participants include city agency leaders, elected officials, community stakeholders, resiliency experts and frontline community organizers, all of whom will meet monthly beginning in May to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability issues facing the borough and craft tangible solutions.
Members, who will serve one-year terms, will be tasked with crafting a yearly report that will inform and guide Borough President Richards’ sustainability and resiliency efforts in topics such as urban agriculture, composting, energy-efficient development, environmental justice, education, nature and ecosystems, flood prevention and resiliency, as well as transportation and walkability.
Members of the public who wish to attend the April 21 press conference are asked to RSVP either by calling 718-286-2640 or emailing [email protected].
