QUEENS, NY – Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee stated the following in response to questions about New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s “State of the State” Address this afternoon:

“Survivors should not be presumed guilty simply because they took a drink, nor should survivors have to forfeit their rights because of that drink,” said Borough President LEE. “Closing the rape intoxication loophole will help lessen the disproportionate burden off of survivors of rape and sexual assault.”

“Queens lauds the governor’s and the state Legislature’s commitment to ways of boosting the economic security of families across the state, including the abolishment of the pink tax, which, frankly, is gender-based pricing discrimination. Also, the exorbitant cost of prescription drugs continues to force upon families, especially our elders, the impossible choice of medication or food on the table. This comprehensive three-part plan is much needed for our growing families.”

“As the borough with the most overcrowded and underfunded schools,” added Borough President LEE, “it is equally encouraging to hear education funding equity will be a top priority of the state.”
