QBP RICHARDS TO HOST VIRTUAL EVENT TO PROMOTE ADVANCE CHILD TAX CREDIT

Monday, September 20 at 6 PM

QUEENS, NY – Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host a virtual information session aimed at encouraging Queens residents who are not receiving the federal Advance Child Tax Credit to sign up for these payments, which can help families pay for groceries, doctor visits, school supplies, and other essentials.

Authorized by the American Rescue Plan (the comprehensive COVID-19 relief legislation that Congress passed and President Biden signed this past March), the Advance Child Tax Credit provides families with children with early payments that represent up to half of what each family may claim as a child tax credit on their 2021 tax return. These early payments amount to $300 per month for each child under six-years-old and $250 per month for each child between the ages of six and seventeen.

Anyone who filed a recent tax return and is eligible for the Advance Child Tax Credit automatically began receiving monthly Advance Child Tax Credit payments this past July 15th, unless they chose to opt out. Unfortunately, many low-income individuals who were not required to file tax returns are not receiving these payments, even though they are entitled to them.

To rectify this problem, Borough President Richards will host a virtual information session on the Advance Child Tax Credit on Monday, September 20 at 6 PM. The session will include a presentation from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which will explain the benefits of the Advance Child Tax Credit and show people how to sign up for it using the online “Child Tax Credit Non-filer Sign-up Tool,” a simple, easy-to-use online form.  The tool can be found on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool.

The IRS will also answer questions about the Advance Child Tax Credit and related issues.

“The American Rescue Plan is groundbreaking legislation that increased and expanded eligibility for the federal child tax credit, making advance payments of this credit available,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “Sadly, many struggling families who could desperately use those advance payments are not getting them because they did not file a recent tax return. I want to stress that any eligible family that is not receiving these payments can start doing so right away, just by logging on to the IRS website and answering a few basic questions. We need to get this money into the hands of the families who need it most. This information session should clarify any misconceptions about the Advance Child Tax Credit, and I encourage more families to sign up.”

“This important new tax change affects millions of families across the nation, and the IRS wants to do everything it can to help people get the payments.” said KEN CORBIN, Wage & Investment Commissioner and Chief Taxpayer Experience Officer for the IRS.

A child of undocumented parents is eligible for the Advance Child Tax Credit if he or she has a Social Security number issued before May 17, 2021 and if his or her undocumented parents have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (or ITIN).

Eligible families that did not sign-up in time to receive their Child Tax Credit during the first rounds of payments can receive increased monthly payments to catch-up for previous months, once they sign up.

The September 20 virtual information session will be livestreamed starting at 6 PM at www.queensbp.org. Those interested in participating in the fair’s live interactive Q&A must RSVP by Sunday, September 19, at www.queensbp.org/rsvp. Instructions on how to participate in the Q&A will be emailed on the day of the event to those who register.
