QBP RICHARDS TO ANNOUNCE NEARLY $30.5 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR QUEENS SCHOOLS

QUEENS, NY – As part of his continuing commitment toward improving the learning environments of all students across The World’s Borough, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host a press conference on Monday, January 22, at 10:15 a.m. to announce his allocation of $30.49 million in capital funding for borough schools in Fiscal Year 2024.
The press conference will be held in the auditorium at August Martin High School in South Jamaica, which received $4.25 million in capital funding from Borough President Richards. The funding included $2 million for renovations to the school’s cafeteria, $1.5 million for gymnasium renovations and $750,000 for auditorium renovations.
Reflecting his desire to address long-standing equity issues related to school building infrastructure, especially among Queens high schools, Borough President Richards’ FY24 allocation of nearly $30.5 million is significantly more than what he allocated to schools in FY22 ($11.5 million) and FY23 ($10.7 million) combined. It also represents his largest single-year allocation in any category — easily surpassing his $20 million investment in Queens parks this fiscal year.
In total, Borough President Richards has allocated nearly $52.8 million in school capital funding since he took office in December 2020.
Joining Borough President Richards at the press conference to discuss the positive impact of his allocation will be administration officials from all three high schools that share the August Martin campus, as well as students, Queens school superintendents and other local education leaders.
