QUEENS, NY – Queens Borough President Donovan Richards stated the following in response to today’s release of the Department of Investigation’s report on its investigation into the NYPD’s handling of protests sparked by the death of George Floyd.

“I’m pleased the report confirms that the NYPD’s tactics were unnecessarily aggressive and I agree with its conclusion that the Department needs major structural change in the way it deals with protests,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “The ability to speak out against injustice is a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment, and the NYPD has a duty to safeguard that right. The NYPD’s obligations to the public include the responsibility to treat all protesters fairly and justly, to refrain from abusive practices like kettling, and to be fully accountable to all those they serve.”
