QUEENS, NY – Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee will host the sixth installation of her “Virtual Queens Jobs Recruitment Fair” on August 5th to connect Queens job seekers to available employment opportunities. Featured employers and recruiters include: the Child Center of New York, Community Capacity Development, the Council for Airport Opportunity, LIFE Camp, Inc., Mercy Home, MetroPlus Health Plan, New York Life, NYC Health + Hospitals, Queens Centers for Progress, Rock Safe Streets — a Sheltering Arms program, WATCH GUARD 24/7, Workforce1 and the Young Adult Institute (YAI).

“With an unemployment rate north of 20 percent in New York City, it is critical that we connect job seekers with available positions in key sectors of our restarting economy,” said Borough President LEE. “We are pleased to have new partners join our returning employers in answering questions live about a wide variety of jobs hiring now.”

Held every third Wednesday, the next Virtual Queens Jobs Recruitment Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5, 2020 online from 2:00PM to 3:30PM. Prospective applicants interested in participating in the live interactive Q&A via Zoom Webinar must RSVP by Tuesday, August 4 at www.queensbp.org/rsvp. The Jobs Recruitment Fair will also be livestreamed at www.queensbp.org/recruitmentfair.

Participants and viewers will hear brief presentations from employers and recruiters seeking to fill hundreds of positions in a variety of service fields including healthcare, transportation, retail, security and more.

The ongoing hiring push comes as Queens’ unemployment rate rose to 21.8 percent in June — up from a mere 3 percent in February — as a result of the economic emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the New York State Department of Labor, more than 1.51 million New York City residents have filed unemployment claims between March 8 and July 18.

“CCD is a nonprofit focused on community empowerment systems, realignment and individual transformation. We invest in the growth, development and trajectory of our teams, our communities and our people,” said Community Capacity Development Executive Director K. BAIN. “During this time of escalated violence and quarantined isolation, it is organizations like CCD that have made sure cities like New York have not broken into violent chaos during this pandemic. Being a part of an organization that confronts social justice issues on the front lines is not only a brave and commendable act, but a necessary, moral responsibility by citizens who truly want to make a difference.”

“LIFE Camp, Inc. is excited to partner with the Queens Borough President’s Office to hire members of our community and join us in our mission to make peace a lifestyle,” said LIFE Camp, Inc. CEO ERICA FORD.

“MetroPlus Health Plan is pleased to participate in the virtual recruitment fair,” said MetroPlus Health Plan Chief Growth Officer ROGER MILLINER. “We applaud Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee and her team on taking the initiative to address the employment needs of New Yorkers, and we look forward to meeting great candidates at the fair.”

“Thank you to Borough President Lee, for we are proud to serve our community and city during this critical time of need,” said New York Life Partner WILLIAM CLEARE. “We look forward to making a difference one interview at a time.”

“Mercy Home’s mission is to ensure the quality of life for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities by recognizing each person’s inherent dignity and the right to a life filled with learning and love,” said Mercy Home Human Resources Manager SOFIYA AVAKYAN.

“With 11 acute care hospitals, a robust network of primary care community health centers, nursing facilities, a home health care agency, and dozens of specialty services and Centers of Excellence, the NYC Health + Hospitals healthcare system offers opportunities for every level of healthcare professional and every kind of setting,” said NYC Health + Hospitals Associate Executive Director of External Affairs CLEON EDWARDS. “Our Health System provides a unique and exciting work environment where healthcare professionals can practice their skills with excellence and share their passion for our mission to care for all New Yorkers regardless of their ability to pay or immigration status.”

“The Council for Airport Opportunity (CAO) is once again honored to partner with Queens Borough President Sharon Lee,” said Council for Airport Opportunity Executive Director ANDREW CAMPBELL. “We are seeing a growing need for more airport workers as we begin to safely and slowly recover from this devastating pandemic. Partnering with the Queens Borough President’s office on this recruitment fair will help the Queens community gain access to much needed employment opportunities. I applaud the Queens Borough President on her efforts to support Queens residents.”

“QCP has been an essential business throughout this pandemic and we have continued to provide quality services to our individuals with special needs,” said Queens Centers for Progress Human Resources Assistant Director MICHELLE JENKINS. “We are delighted to continue this partnership with the Queens Borough President’s Office to provide meaningful positions that offer great benefits and growth opportunities.”

We are an essential business providing service throughout this difficult time and beyond.”
