BP LEE ON CON EDISON’S DISASTROUS RESPONSE IN QUEENS FOLLOWING TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS

QUEENS, NY – Acting Queens Borough President Sharon Lee stated the following in response to questions about Con Edison’s response and restoration in Queens post-Tropical Storm Isaias:

“Unacceptable is an understatement. ConEd’s own published numbers indicate the company surged power restoration in other boroughs, but deprived Queens – the hardest hit borough from the start – of the same necessary urgency throughout the critical first 48 hours of recovery post-Isaias. Nearly 72 hours after the storm, over 28,000 Queens customers – more than the other four boroughs combined – are still in the dark.

“For residents, we are grateful to the workers, but patience for ConEd has rightfully long run dry. The only thing reliable about ConEd post-Isaias has been its consistent failure to communicate accurately and effectively to its customers and representative officials.  Power is essential, and the restoration of power especially after a storm is a race against time for safety, public confidence and the preservation of livelihoods. In this race, ConEd has utterly and spectacularly failed Queens.”

The graphic found here and below, using ConEd’s own figures, reveals the disparate pace and breadth of restoration by ConEd for Queens residents during the first critical days after Tropical Storm Isaias.
