QUEENS, NY – The Western Queens coastline has changed dramatically in recent years, but Hallets Cove in Astoria has fallen into a deep state of ecological neglect. To begin transforming this forgotten section of waterfront into a serene hub of nature and leisure, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., along with New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), former City Council Member Costa Constantinides and community leaders, will break ground tomorrow, November 18 at 11:30AM on the restoration of Hallets Cove.
Following a series of community input sessions in recent years, restoration begins this fall with NYCEDC overseeing the demolition and removal of the dilapidated radio tower pier and other debris, the restoration of the esplanade railing, and the installation of a new railing along Vernon Boulevard. Ecological improvements will include the replacement of invasive plant species with new wetland vegetation to restore the cove’s tidal flats, as well as the planting of new street trees. Completion is anticipated to occur in the spring of 2022.
The total cost of the project is $5 million, of which $3 million had been allocated by the Borough President’s Office across Fiscal Years 2016 and 2017. The Mayor’s Office and then-Council Member Constantinides each allocated $1 million in funding toward the restoration of Hallets Cove.
Members of the media who wish to attend the November 18 groundbreaking are asked to RSVP via email at [email protected] or via phone at 718-286-2640.
