QUEENS, NY – More than 1.7 million Queens residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, but significant discrepancies in vaccination rates still exist from one corner of the borough to the other. To promote the critical importance of getting vaccinated in sections of Queens with lower vaccination rates, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr. and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will host a #QueensVaxWeek of action press conference and outreach event tomorrow, September 30, at 2:30pm, hosted by McDonald’s outside its 2141 Mott Avenue restaurant in Far Rockaway.

In April, Queens became the first county in the state to have 1 million residents vaccinated. Among adults age 18 and older, 89 percent of Queens residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as of Wednesday, while 82 percent are fully vaccinated — the highest rates of any borough in the city.

However, vaccination rates in historically underserved communities across Southeast Queens and the Rockaway Peninsula, while slowly improving, have lagged. As of Wednesday, ZIP Code 11691, made up of Far Rockaway and Edgemere had the second-lowest vaccination rate of any ZIP Code in the city among residents of all ages, with just 48.38 percent of residents having received at least one dose. Vaccination rates across the eastern Rockaway Peninsula and Southeast Queens currently range between 53 and 59 percent.

Efforts to encourage vaccinations as part of #QueensVaxWeek, of which the Queens McDonald’s restaurant will participate in, include culturally competent outreach conducted by more than a dozen borough elected officials and community organizations at mass transit hubs, business corridors, libraries, schools, senior centers and other high-traffic locations across Queens. Following the press conference, Borough President Richards will tour the Mott Avenue business corridor to discuss the importance of getting vaccinated with business owners and shoppers.

Members of the media who wish to attend the September 30 press conference and outreach event are asked to RSVP via email at [email protected] or via phone at 718-286-2640.
