QUEENS, NY – Borough President Melinda Katz stated the following about the New York City Schools Chancellor’s selection of a permanent principal at Townsend Harris High School:

“Deep unrest over the principal selection process has upended the entire Townsend Harris High School community since September. The long-awaited resolution is welcome news, and the entire school community can now finally move forward.

“The situation at Townsend Harris, however, highlighted the broken way the New York City school system chooses principals. The current process is shrouded under a veil of silence and secrecy and excludes any public oversight or mechanism for appeal. Reforms to Chancellor’s Regulation C-30 are necessary and long overdue.”

Borough President Katz penned an op-ed in the New York Daily News on March 27 highlighting the need for changes to Chancellor’s Regulation C-30, the Chancellor’s official principal hiring process.
