QUEENS, NY – The final full month of summer might be winding down, but there’s no stopping Queens from enjoying some warm-weather outdoor fun just yet. To celebrate summer with families from across the borough, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. proudly presents “Queens Live!” — a free, three-show, borough-spanning concert series of various genres, produced in partnership with NYC Parks and the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College.

“After an unprecedented 17-month period of loss, uncertainty and seclusion, we are thrilled to be able to bring families from across Queens together this summer for three incredible evenings of great music, memorable experiences and a sense of community we have all sorely missed,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “Come dance with your toes in the sand, frolic with your family or pay tribute to a music legend at Queens Live! and celebrate all that makes our borough such a dynamic place to call home.”

The free concert series begins this Saturday, August 28 from 3PM to 7PM with Reggae on the Boardwalk: Rockaways Edition, taking place on the Rockaway Boardwalk at Beach 94th Street. The show will include performances by DJ Jah Wise, DJ Vaughn Allstar, Mighty Redeemer, Johnny Osbourne and more.

Founded in Coney Island by Carter Van Pelt in 2010, Reggae on the Boardwalk celebrates the popular Jamaican genre and highlights local performing artists, bringing together multicultural audiences for memorable afternoons of music and dancing. After years of performances in Brooklyn and the Bronx, the August 28 concert will be the first Reggae on the Boardwalk event hosted in Queens.

On Sunday, September 12 at 6PM in Jackson Heights’ Travers Park, Borough President Richards will host a family-friendly concert by 123 Andres, a Latin Grammy Award-winning husband and wife duo with a performance geared toward children. With music in both English and Spanish, 123 Andres produce high-energy shows to engage families through song and dance, creating an enjoyable experience for all involved.

Hosted in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the September 12 concert will double as Borough President Richards’ annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.

Queens Live! concludes on Sunday, September 19 in Springfield Gardens’ Baisley Pond Park with a Tribute to Biz Markie from 6PM to 8PM. Hosted by Video Music Box co-host Ralph McDaniels and featuring the legendary Cutmaster Cool-V, the show will pay homage to the “Just a Friend” hit-maker, known affectionately as the “Clown Prince of Hip-Hop,” who passed away last month at the age of 57.

All three concerts are free to attend, open to the public and do not require registration in advance.

“Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College is proud to partner with the Borough President’s Office and NYC Parks with the Queens Live! concert series,” said Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College Director JON YANOFSKY. “From reggae to hip-hop and Latinx family music, the series will mark the return of great free live music in the parks throughout Queens, a true summer tradition!”

“The Queens Live! summer concert series is an exciting opportunity to safely connect with the community after the tough time we’ve all had throughout this pandemic,” said NYC Parks Acting Commissioner MARGARET NELSON. “The idea of everyone enjoying music and celebrating culture in unison feels like a huge step towards our recovery, and we are excited to help deliver this experience to the community. From the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk to Travers and Baisley Pond Parks, we hope that people all over Queens and beyond check out these fun concerts. We look forward to seeing you all out there!”

“It’s important we find time to make memories with our loved ones and neighbors,” said Congressman GREGORY MEEKS. “I commend Borough President Richards, NYC Parks Department and Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College for making sure Queens residents end this summer on a high note celebrating safely with live music.”

“The ‘Queens Live!’ Summer 2021 Concert series will be an exciting opportunity for our borough to celebrate the end of summer,” said Assembly Member KAHLEEL ANDERSON. “I thank Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr., NYC Parks, and the Kupferberg Center for the Arts for providing a celebration of music, culture, and unity in our communities.”

“The ‘Queens Live!’ concert series will provide families exciting opportunities to enjoy great music and celebrate with friends and neighbors before summer is over,” said Council Member ADRIENNE ADAMS. “I look forward to participating and paying homage to the life and legacy of Biz Markie, a hip hop legend, at Baisley Pond Park in my district. I encourage all families to come out and celebrate Queens!”

“As we bid a fond farewell to summer, a Queens Live! concert is the perfect place to enjoy the best food, music, and company our communities have to offer,” said Council Member SELVENA N. BROOKS-POWERS. “I invite our neighbors to join the festivities and spend an evening celebrating our borough’s cultural icons.”
