Allocations Reflect Continuous Commitment to Strengthen Borough’s Infrastructure
QUEENS, NY – Borough President Melinda Katz today unveiled her $65 million in Fiscal Year 2020 discretionary fund allocations for important constructions, renovations and upgrades across 80 capital projects throughout Queens. The $65 million – part of the $92.8 billion FY20 budget agreement reached by the Mayor and City Council on Friday – comes on top of the $335 million in funding Borough President Katz previously allocated to Queens capital projects since January 2014, and reflects her continued commitment to strengthening the borough’s infrastructure.
“These are substantial public investments for not only renovations, expansions and enhancements, but also into the future for the growing communities and families of Queens,” said Borough President KATZ. “From our public schools to affordable housing to parks to hospitals, when deciding where to invest precious resources, we know that if it’s good for families, it’s good for Queens.”
The Borough President’s FY20 capital allocations include:
- $23.5 million for Queens parks and recreational facilities, bringing total allocations for parks projects up to $128 million since January 2014 to ensure ample access to beautiful public parks and open space;
- $13.1 million for Queens K-12 public schools, bringing total allocations for schools up to $67.4 million since January 2014 to ensure up-to-date equipment at schools and instructional tech tools in the classrooms, including SMART Boards, laptop computers and more;
- $10.3 million for Queens cultural institutions, bringing total allocations for cultural organizations up to $39.8 million since January 2014;
- $1.5 million for Queens libraries, bringing total allocations for libraries up to $46.9 million since January 2014 to help the Queens Public Library continue to be a first-class library system of learning, literacy and culture.
Borough President Katz’s $65 million FY20 capital allocations break down as follows:
CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS
- Bowne House: $1,000,000 for visitor center renovations
- Conrad Poppenhusen Association: $700,000 for historic light fixtures and a blue stone perimeter sidewalk
- Flushing Town Hall: $800,000 for bathroom renovations
- Greater Ridgewood Historical Society: $250,000 for the restoration of the exterior envelope of the Onderdonk House
- Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning: $500,000 for an outdoor performance space
- Louis Armstrong House: $500,000 for equipment for a new education center
- Maspeth Town Hall: $1,700,000 for building renovations
- New York Hall of Science: $750,000 for the construction of a new elevator
- Queens Botanical Garden: $750,000 for the construction of the kids culture garden
- Queens County Farm Museum: $1,500,000 for the construction of a new education center and $150,000 for the Administration building
- Queens Historical Society: $800,000 for the renovation of two rooms in the basement of Kingsland Homestead
- Queens Theatre: $815,000 for a boiler replacement
- RIOULT Dance New York: $42,000 for a theatrical lighting system for its black box theater
CUNY
- CUNY Law: $1,000,000 for network system enhancement
- LaGuardia Community College: $1,000,000 for library renovation phase II
- Queens College: $1,000,000 for Colden Center theatrical infrastructure
- Queensborough Community College: $1,000,000 for Americans with Disabilities Act restroom upgrades
- York College: $1,000,000 for performing arts center upgrades
HOSPITALS/HEALTH CARE
- Community Healthcare Network: $700,000 for the initial outfitting of the Tree of Life in Jamaica
- NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst: $1,000,000 for a labor and delivery suite and $25,000 for medical equipment
- Floating Hospital: $201,000 for the initial outfitting of a new site in Long Island City.
- Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center: $880,000 for the renovation and expansion of site at 114-39 Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica
- Mount Sinai Queens: $511,000 for echocardiography equipment in Astoria
HOUSING
- Fifth Avenue Committee: $1,000,000 for ongoing construction of 159 units at Seventh Day Adventist in Jamaica/Springfield Gardens
- Milton P. Browne Community Square: $1,000,000 for the development of a mixed use affordable housing development in Edgemere
- The Crossing at Jamaica Station: $1,000,000 for construction of affordable housing in Jamaica
NON-PROFIT SERVICES
- India Home: $1,025,000 for new site acquisition in Queens Village
- Korean American Family Service Center: $1,000,000 for the reconstruction of a domestic violence shelter
- New York Blood Center: $283,000 for the construction of a new clean room in Manhattan
- Queens Community House: $1,650,000 for the construction of community center in Forest Hills
- Samuel Field YM&YWHA: $426,000 for the initial outfitting of a new site in Elmhurst

- Hoover Manton Playground in Briarwood: $1,195,000 for a play equipment and spray showers upgrade
- Macneil Park in College Point: $220,000 to repair to remaining portion of fencing and seawall access
