As of January 15, 2022, New York State’s eviction moratorium was allowed to expire. However, there are a number of programs and initiatives, however, to keep New Yorkers in their homes, beginning with the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). See more information below about ERAP.
Emergency Rental Assistance Program:
The Governor’s Office has announced the launch of the COVID Rent Relief emergency rental assistance program to help keep low-income families throughout New York in their homes.
The program is designed to reach those individuals and families with the greatest need, and will provide direct aid for tenants who lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both tenants and landlords can apply.
This program is funded through the Coronavirus Relief Fund, which is part of the CARES Act. The program will be administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal and access to program applications will be is available online here.

Homeowner Assistance Fund
Borough President Richards hosted a Homeowner Assistance Fund webinar on Jan. 13 to help inform homeowners of their rights. The full video is below:
Applications are now being accepted for the New York State Homeowner Assistance Fund (NYSHAF), a program that will provide up to $539 million in aid or other direct assistance to help eligible homeowners who are at risk of default, foreclosure, or displacement due to financial hardship caused by the pandemic.
Winter Assistance Workshop
The winter of 2021-2022 could be a difficult time for many New Yorkers managing energy costs, as forecasts indicate energy prices will be higher than last year. To ensure all consumers are aware of steps they can take to reduce their energy use and manage their bills this winter, the New York State Department of Public Service will host a series of regional virtual workshops about resources available to help consumers this winter.
The New York City Metro Area Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 27 at 1pm. To complete registration, enter your name, email address and the workshop password — Jan27-1pm.
Topics covered during the workshops will include financial assistance programs, such as Home Energy and Low-Income Household Water Assistance Programs, utility energy affordability programs, weatherization and other actions consumers can take to be energy efficient, home and community-based services and supports for older adults and their caregivers, and how to direct consumers to the winter resources. Each workshop is expected to be approximately 90 minutes with an opportunity to ask questions following the presentations.
