In recognition of our nation’s military members and veterans, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz will host a Memorial Day Ceremony on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial Garden in front of Queens Borough Hall.

     The ceremony will pay tribute to all Queens residents who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, with a focus on those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

     “The members of our country’s armed services have sacrificed so much to protect our lives and our liberty,” Borough President Katz said. “In many cases, they never returned home to their loved ones. This ceremony will give us the opportunity to recognize all military members, past and present, for what they have done to allow us to enjoy the freedoms we all too often take for granted.” 

     Borough President Katz will deliver welcoming remarks and participate in the presentation of a wreath in memory of the fallen. Also participating will be the three veterans who will receive individual honors during the ceremony. They are:

     The ceremony will also include remarks about the 70th anniversary of D-Day delivered by Arno Heller, a veteran of the United States Air Force.

           

     Among the dignitaries in attendance will be state senator and United States Marine Corps veteran James Sanders Jr., who will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

     The hour-long ceremony will be followed by a reception and Veterans Art Show inside Borough Hall. The show will feature a display of artwork created by our nation’s military veterans.
