QUEENS, NY – In celebration of The World’s Borough’s unparalleled diversity, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will host a pair of cultural ceremonies in early September — beginning tomorrow, September 1, with his inaugural Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration and continuing on Tuesday, September 13 with a Caribbean Heritage Celebration.

“Here in Queens, where nearly 200 countries are represented and at least 350 languages and dialects are spoken, we proudly embrace and celebrate the holidays and heritages of our neighbors. This September, we’ll continue to do just that with our first-ever Mid-Autumn Festival, followed by our Caribbean Heritage Celebration,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “Both our AAPI and Caribbean communities define who we are as a borough, and I encourage all our families regardless of background to come enjoy these can’t-miss celebrations of culture and cuisine.”

The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated across East and Southeast Asia, marks the fall harvest season with family gatherings and shared meals. Borough President Richards’ 6pm celebration at Queens Borough Hall will commemorate this joyous holiday with performances, interactive cultural activities and traditions like the serving of mooncakes.

Event co-sponsors include Congress Member Grace Meng, State Senator John Liu, City Council Members Julie Won, Linda Lee and Sandra Ung, Healthfirst, Garden of Hope, the Korean American Family Service Center, Korean Community Services of Metropolitan New York, International Buddhist Progress Society and Hanfu NYC.

Borough President Richards’ office will hit the road on September 13, with the Queens Museum playing host to his Caribbean Heritage Celebration, beginning at 6pm. The event will pay homage to the dozens of distinct Caribbean cultures represented in The World’s Borough. Co-sponsored by Ponce Bank, the celebration will include performances, refreshments and more.

In addition, Borough President Richards will host a Black Business Month networking event tonight, August 31, at Queens Borough Hall beginning at 6pm, as well as a NYC Council Redistricting Virtual Town Hall on September 14 at 6pm via Zoom.

Co-sponsored by the NYC Department of Small Business Services, Queens Chamber of Commerce, the Queens Economic Development Corporation and the Jamaica Center BID, the Black Business Month Celebration will allow Queens residents and entrepreneurs to network with and learn more about the many Black-owned Queens small businesses who will be tabling on-site. The event will also include a dance performance and remarks from Queens business leaders.

Lastly, with the City Council redistricting process underway, Borough President Richards’ virtual town hall will allow residents the opportunity to ask questions of local experts from Citizens Union, CUNY Graduate Center and other entities about what redistricting means for their communities.
