Day also includes Immigrant Resource Fair at Corona Plaza; Bystander Training in Jackson Heights

(August 23, 2023 at 9am)

QUEENS, NY – A busy day of public events as part of Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr.’s ongoing “Borough Hall on Your Block: Northwest Queens” initiative is on tap for tomorrow, August 24, bookended by a 10am press conference to announce more than $1 million in funding for Travers Park in Jackson Heights and a 6pm community town hall in Corona.

Held inside the 77th Street entrance to Travers Park between Northern Boulevard and 34th Avenue, the funding announcement will detail Borough President Richards’ $1.05 million Fiscal Year 2024 allocation to support the reconstruction of the park’s aging basketball court. Over the course of his administration, the Borough President has allocated more than $20.2 million in capital funding across nearly three dozen parks and recreational spaces boroughwide.

Joining Borough President Richards for the press conference will be Council Member and Parks Committee Chairman Shekar Krishnan, NYC Parks Queens Borough Commissioner Jackie Langsam and community open space advocates.

In the evening, Borough President Richards will host a Northwest Queens Town Hall from 6pm to 8pm at Aliento de Vida Christian Church, located at 103-12 Roosevelt Avenue in Corona.

The town hall will feature remarks from the Borough President and updates from numerous government agencies — including the NYPD, the MTA and the city departments of Education, Consumer and Worker Protection, Health and Mental Hygiene, Parks and Recreation, Sanitation, Social Services and Transportation — on issues impacting Northwest Queens. Attendees will also be able to ask questions of Borough President Richards and agency representatives.

Members of the media who wish to attend the above press conference and/or the town hall are asked to RSVP by emailing [email protected] or calling 718-286-2640.

Additionally, Borough President Richards will host an Immigrant Resource Fair and Pop-Up Pantry from 11am to 2pm at Corona Plaza, located on Roosevelt Avenue between National Street and 104th Street in Corona.

Numerous city agencies and community-based organizations will be on hand to connect immigrant New Yorkers with the critical resources they need, including legal services, health insurance enrollment assistance, securing an IDNYC card, job placement and more. Attendees will also be able to secure food, clothing, school supplies and more for free during the fair.

Lastly, Borough President Richards will host a Bystander Intervention Training workshop in partnership with the NYC Commission on Human Rights from 4pm to 5:30pm at the Apicha Community Health Center, located at 82-11 37th Avenue in Jackson Heights. Participants in the workshop will learn the necessary tools and strategies to safely respond when witnessing bias incidents and discrimination.

Members of the public who are interested in attending the Northwest Queens Town Hall, Immigrant Resource Fair and/or the Bystander Intervention Training are asked to RSVP by visiting www.queensbp.org/RSVP.
