QBP RICHARDS TO MARK EARTH WEEK WITH QUEENS SUSTAINABILITY TOUR

Visits to Queens Botanical Garden and Jamaica Bay coincide with release of Operation Urban Sustainability’s inaugural report

QUEENS, NY – To mark Earth Week and to highlight critical climate resiliency work being done across the borough, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. will embark on a Queens sustainability tour on Monday, April 17 from 11am to 1pm, paying visits to the Queens Botanical Garden and the Jamaica Bay.

The tour will begin at 11am at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing, where the Borough President will visit the facility’s innovative, 3,000-square-foot green roof, among its other ongoing sustainability efforts.

The jaunt will conclude with a 12:15pm visit to Jamaica Bay’s “living shoreline” and the West Pond restoration project with the Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy. Accessible via the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center in Broad Channel, the living shoreline includes a new 9-acre marsh habitat, which both protects the bay against sea level rise and includes more than 200,000 new native plantings.

The two-stop tour will coincide with the release of the first yearly report compiled by Operation Urban Sustainability — a working group comprised of borough and city leaders across the spectrum of resiliency that Borough President Richards formed in April 2022. Operation Urban Sustainability members were tasked with conducting a comprehensive assessment of the sustainability issues facing the borough and crafting tangible solutions centering on resiliency, as well as environmental justice and equity.

“There is much more work we need to do as a city in terms of leading the fight against climate change, but Queens is wasting no time in taking a leadership role in our own right to protect the only home we’ll ever know,” said Borough President RICHARDS. “I look forward to highlighting the innovative work being done across Queens to ensure our borough is as resilient and sustainable as possible.”

Members of the media who would like to attend one or both of the Borough President’s Queens sustainability tour stops on April 17 are asked to RSVP via email at [email protected] or via phone at 718-286-2640.
